Donderdag 8 maart markeert Internationale Women’s Day – the day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world!
And for those of us celebrating in the UK, this year’s International Women’s Day is particularly special as 2018 marked 100 years since some women in the UK were granted suffrage – that’s the right to vote!

Meghan Markle (geboren 1981)
American actress Meghan – who now calls Kensington Palace home – is quickly becoming one of the most famous women in the UK (and the world!), but what you may not know that she’s long been involved with humanitarian work. She’s campaigned fiercely for women’s rights as part of her Women’s Advocate role for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. She’s been Global Ambassador for World Vision, supporting the charity’s Clean Water Campaign and raising awareness of women’s menstrual health in India, where sanitary products aren’t so readily available. We are looking forward to seeing her wedding with Prince Harry!
Camila Batmanghelidjh (geboren in 1963)
Camila verliet Iran om als kind asiel aan te vragen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Sindsdien heeft ze zich ingezet om het leven van Britse kinderen te verbeteren door het opzetten van de Londense liefdadigheidsinstellingen Kids Company en Place2Be, die kinderen ondersteunen met psychotherapie en counseling. Place2Be heeft zelfs een koninklijke beschermvrouw in de persoon van Kate Middleton, de hertogin van Cambridge.
Oprah Winfrey (geboren in 1954)
From her humble beginnings as the daughter to a poor single mother in Mississippi, she has turned her life around to become a successful and generous philanthropist, as well as becoming what she is most known for… a bubbly and charismatic talk show host! She has both popularised and revolutionised the talk show genre. Now…how do we get on her show?
Valerie Amos (geboren in 1954)
Barones Amos werd geboren in Guyana voordat ze naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk verhuisde, waar ze een ongelooflijke carrière in de Britse politiek heeft opgebouwd. In 1989 werd ze Chief Executive van de Equal Opportunities Commission, voordat ze in 1997 Labour Life Peer werd en een jaar later minister onder Tony Blair. In 2003 werd ze minister van Internationale Ontwikkeling!
Dame Zaha Hadid (1950 – 2016)
The award-winning architect was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and moved to London to study and became a British citizen. Zaha worked on some of the UK’s most famous buildings (such as the London Aquatics Centre built for the 2012 Olympics) and was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She received the UK’s most prestigious architectural award, the Stirling Prize, in 2010 and 2011.
Mary Seacole (1805 – 1881)
De in Jamaica geboren Mary tartte de sociale verwachtingen door zichzelf om te scholen tot verpleegster en voor zieke en gewonde soldaten te zorgen tijdens de Krimoorlog. Ze opende een "Brits Hotel" in de buurt van het slagveld waar soldaten konden uitrusten, warme voedselHet geld dat ze daarmee verdiende, gebruikte ze om de behandeling van zieken te financieren. Tussen haar reizen door bracht ze veel tijd door in Groot-Brittannië, onder andere in haar Londense huis in Paddington.
