And eat! And sing! October is an eventful month, especially in a busy place like London, and one of the events we want to highlight this Black History Month is… *suspense*… you guessed it: Africa on the Square!

Happening on October 14th, Africa on the Square is one of Europe’s biggest celebrations of all things African. Last year, over 25,000 people attended this event to celebrate the positive influence that the African community has had on London and the U.K. over the years. So, this year’s event can only be bigger and better! The entire continent will be represented through some of the best African music, arts, and food. And of course, we’ll be there with plenty of activities for you to get involved with. So, don’t forget to pop by the Lebara Mobile stall too to find more about how you can call Ghana and call Nigeria on the day for less!

Dance to African Music

What can you look forward to? Well, there will be DJs and live music playing at all times to keep you entertained throughout the day. How else will you get that party rhythm going? There’s an exciting line up of singers, musicians and dance performances representing rhythms from all corners of the continent, including BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter DJ Edu.

AND for all aspiring singers out there, this one’s for you: there’s a talent show you can enter on the day. This is your time to shine! The lucky winner is in for a chance to be featured in the official 2017 Africa on the Square highlights video, get booked for a performance at next year’s event and will go home with a £200 – yes, that’s right – £200 prize!

On top of all the musical activities happening on stage, (quite literally) off stage, there will be West African drumming and dance workshops for you to learn more about music from the region. So bring your best moves, join the circle, and to try your hand at a traditional West African dance! Amongst all the excitement, find out more on the day about how you can get cheap international calls.

Enjoy African Arts & more activities

Away from the stage, there will be lots of other fun activities for the whole family to get involved with. Kids will love making their own animal masks, attend the jewellery and bead making workshops, try screen printing, and get the chance to make their own mosaic art to take home. Oh, and by the way kids, while you’re busy creating at one of the workshops, you can send your parents away to enjoy some dance or sports fun!

Yes, sport fans, don’t worry, you won’t be left out! West African players and Jolof Sports Club will be providing free football workshops for you to take part in. Plus, after all that exercise has you worn out, you can relax with a visit to the massage stall for a quick (yet incredibly effective) shoulder message, or call Nigeria or call Ghana to say hello to loved ones back in Africa.

Eat African Food

Singing, dancing and creating is fun, but a celebration is not a celebration, until food is involved. Yes, there will there be FOOD! An African food market is included in the Africa on the Square program, so get your bellies ready for some of the best traditional African recipes. There’ll be delicacies from Sudan, Cameroon, Morocco and everywhere in between, so this might be a good time to finally put an end to the Nigerian vs. Ghanaian Jollof Rice debate. Plus there’s plenty of opportunities to enjoy your favorite dishes and also try something delicious for the first time.

Your African Connections

In between all that eating and the dancing, don’t forget to make some time to come by our stall at the festival!
